Uncle Sam Wants YOU! and the Mash-Up issue

After a valuable meeting and an insightful conversation with another young developer both converged on the same topic, it seems that maybe I should put more consideration into it and eventually discuss it here. The topic was the costs and benefits of building clubs from scratch versus aggregating all (or as many) of its eventual services--i. e. the calendar, inbox, etc.--via mash-up of existing sites like Flickr, and Ning. I'm not ready to articulate those costs and benefits yet but the question is definitely on mind. On a related note, as things are finally starting to get rolling ...
